When All You Want Is Family Peace

I knew Gary was writing a book, but it wasn’t until I heard him talk, in person, that I knew it was for me. I sat in a group of people who had assembled for a writing conference and we listened as he told us about his “person”.

His “person” was the individual he would think about as he wrote his book. He sat on that stool and described her and I started to cry. It was the first time I had ever heard that someone had written a book specifically for me.

And he hadn’t yet met me.

I cornered him later and told him I was his person. Then he asked if I would like to be an early reader of his book, but he gave me a warning: “You might not like it. It might make you mad.” I gave him my email address and a few weeks later, I had a copy of A Family Shaped by Grace, How to Get Along with the People Who Matter Most.

He was right. There were some parts of it I didn’t like. It wasn’t a book about fixing anyone else. And you know what? That’s the most powerful thing about this book. What use is a book about all the things someone else should do differently?

Gary’s book releases on June 6th (tomorrow!) and I wish I could order it for everyone I know: for the sister who is struggling, for the mom who wants to connect with her kids, for the therapist who wants a resource for her client. You can get it here.

As Gary says, “How does God go about this “something big”? He starts with family.”

That’s a great place to start.
