My Favorite Goal Tracking App Is My Notebook

I really wanted to title this post, “You WON’T BELIEVE the amazing app I found!” as a way to tease my friend, Lyneta who refuses to click on click-bait. She will NOT be baited. I changed my mind and decided to go with the more straight-forward approach.

My favorite app for tracking my goals is my notebook. There. That’s it.

I could end the post right now, but I do actually have a few things I want to say about why it’s my favorite.

  • I don’t get distracted by nit-picky technical details when I use it. I’m the queen of distractions. I get a great idea and then don’t implement it because I’m so busy trying to figure out the best way to make the idea show up on my computer. Do you know the number of times my notebook has locked up and I had to reboot it? Exactly Zero times. The up-time on this is amazing. Same thing with the number of email or social media notifications I get when using my cute spiral notebook. It never happens.

  • I love the tactile experience of writing with a pen on paper. I love to write lists. I would rather use a pen and paper for a list than type it into a program or app. Different story with writing something longer. If I’m going to be doing multiple paragraphs, my computer is my favorite.

  • I can personalize it in any way I want. At the beginning of this year, I had a grand plan that I would deputize my web-developer husband to create an app for me to track my goals. I had some very specific ideas about how I wanted it to be laid out. He could have done it, but it would have taken a while. I would probably still be waiting and I would have had to compromise on some things.

  • It’s a visible reminder. I don’t have to turn on my computer to see it. It’s always sitting on my desk or kitchen counter. This makes it so much harder to forget about it.

Are you dying to get a tour of my Goal Notebook??

First of all, isn’t the cover yummy? Just looking at it makes me happy!

Can you see the two tabs on the side? I picked up some post-it notes that have tabs on them and used them to separate my notebook into several sections. I’ll get back to that. The first page inside has a list of my big goals for the year.

On the pages following the year-end goals are where I break-down what I need to do each day to make progress. I place a tab there to mark where I can find my goals for the current day. Every day I look at my year-end goals and I make a daily to-do list. I don’t work on every single item every day, but I keep them in mind so I don’t forget them.

I have a separate tab about 3/4 of the way back in the notebook. On those pages, I track specific milestones. One of the things I’m doing there is writing down the name of each book I read this year since reading a certain number of books is a goal I have. This is where I write down the specific progress I’ve made. At the end of the year, I can look at those pages and see what I’ve accomplished.

You might have already figured this out, but I’ve discovered that best app or tracking device is the one you use. It’s the one that helps you make progress toward your goal. My notebook does that for me. Maybe you need to take a field trip to WalMart or Target for a darling notebook!

What works for you? I would love to hear what you use!
