Lessons From 2013- Giving

Last year, as we wrapped up 2012, Nathan and I felt like God was calling us to a new level of giving and generosity. After praying about it for a while, we were in agreement and Nathan suggested a goal for “extra” giving. It was higher than I would have set on my own, but I was ready for the challenge. It’s been a year now and I’m excited to tell you all that has transpired.

Last December, after deciding to increase our giving, we found out our medical insurance costs were going up a lot.

In January Nathan got Bell’s Palsy. We had a few extra  medical expenses incurred as a result.

We continued to rent out our home in MN at a loss each month.

There was major flooding in MN that caused us to have more house expenses and loss of rent income.

However.

God provided for us through so many amazing ways. We were the recipients of some humbling generosity. We were able to find an insurance plan that saved us $292/month . And God made a way for us to stay on that plan through next year saving us at least $400/month over our alternative. We were also able to buy a home here in Tennessee this year.

This fall, we received a check that we weren’t expecting and it was almost the exact cost of the water heater that we needed to replace in MN.

I can honestly say that we have not missed that “extra” at all. I’ve said before that the math shouldn’t work. Somehow, God makes it work. I wanted to share this– not because we have done anything great. We’re purposefully not sharing how much or how little we give because that’s not really the point. The point is that God has done great things and we are honored and humbled that we get to be a part of this.

Have you been the recipient of someone else’s generosity? Have you been able to give more than you thought you could? I would love to hear about it.

  1. Way to go, guys! I know how hard it is to trust sometimes, but it seems we are always rewarded in some way when we do, even if it is just with the awesome feeling that comes with following through on a promise.
