Deep Theology And 4 Year Olds

Today my preschooler is singing with with his class for the entire congregation. They are going to rock out to “My God is A Great Big God”. I will stand and watch him hoping to catch his eye. I will cry and wave like a fool when he sees me.  Sometimes I feel at a loss when it comes to teaching my kids about BIG THINGS about God because  I’m afraid that I’m not going to do it right. That’s one reason I’m thankful for songs. I’ve learned deep theology from hymns, choruses and even children’s songs.

Do you know what one of my favorite things is to do with my 4 year old? We sing “Lord, I Need You” by Matt Maher. He doesn’t understand it all, but he loves it. He knows what “Lord, I need you” means and one day he will understand “Where sin runs deep, Your grace is more”.

“Lord, I Need You” lyrics

Lord, I come, I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
Without You I fall apart
You’re the One that guides my heart

Lord, I need You, oh, I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You

Where sin runs deep Your grace is more
Where grace is found is where You are
And where You are, Lord, I am free
Holiness is Christ in me

Teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand I’ll fall on You
Jesus, You’re my hope and stay

What songs are your kids singing these days? I would love to hear from you!

  1. Maddie May is obsessed with the book of Ruth right now and always wants to sing or have me sing to her “I Will Follow You” by Chris Tomlin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ODe4sGCKxc). Practically every night she asks in bed, “Will you tell me about Ruth?” I love that she soaks in Bible stories and wants to hear them over and over. It doesn’t hurt that Ruth is one of my favorite women of the Bible so I am usually happy to tell the story over and over.
